The Power of Now

Posted on June 12, 2015 by Rob Spera

I tried my first audio book on a Kindle today while driving through northern Alabama and Mississippi. The book was called “The Power of Now”. The book is quite well known and highly recommended, an inspirational book dealing with living in the present and not worrying about the past or the future. The book was pure gibberish. I thought I had some setting on the Kindle wrong where the words were just looping over and over. I thought it was playing the first chapter over and over again. Finally I got a headache and turned it off. Although today I could really appreciate just living in the present, and I mean right here and right now, pure concentration at 70 mph with cars and trucks zooming all around me. I am using maps from AAA called a Trip Tik, consisting of turn by turn directions for a destination. The Trip Tik is really set up for two people, one to drive, and the other to read the directions. The Trip Tik gives good directions for getting around major cities without going through the cities. However, this usually means taking about four or five very quick turns. Driving by yourself, your have to memorize all these turns, exit numbers, routes numbers, and mileages. Getting around Montgomery and Birmingham Alabama was difficult and stressful with all the traffic. However Memphis was truly frightening. There are so many trucks there. With my roof top carrier, bike rack, and Florida tag, I might as well had a “Hit Me” sign on the back of the truck. The Sequoia is a fairly large vehicle, so I was able to hold my own. After turns to the left of me, turns to the right of me, and almost 270 degree turns, finally I saw the top of a span of a bridge. Tears came to my eyes as I realized seeing the span meant I was about to cross the Mississippi River and I had navigated the maze of Memphis correctly. Two years ago while on a bike tour in Minnesota, I also crossed the Mississippi River near its headwaters. The river was only about 50 feet wide up there.
