This is the first real excursion in the motorhome. The first two trips were mostly checkout/shakedown trips. We are on Sanibel Island, located near the southern tip of Florida’s Gulf Coast. We are staying in a quaint RV park. Most of the units here are mobile homes occupied by either full time residents or snowbirds. Walking around the trailer park makes me feel like I have been transported back in time to the 1950s. The trailers are charming and each is unique, with tiny yards decorated with amusing items like plastic pink flamingos. Many residents decorated their homes with Christmas lights and displays. Sanibel Island is ideal for cycling. Most of the roads have a bike path that allow you to circumnavigate the entire 18 mile long island without ever getting on a road. Much of the island is a wildlife refuge which I plan to cycle through today. The cats are becoming very comfortable in the coach. There are large windows for them to look out and be entertained and they have found their favorite places to lay around.
Rob ….. It has been around 25-years since we have been to Sanibel Island. This island is different than most in Florida due to it’s heavy concentration of trees and high bushes. Not just a glorified sand-dune. Also no fast-food joints (e.g. golden-arches) used to be allowed. The hurricane (Charlie) in 2004 probably did some minor alterations. Sanibel is definitely a little more “laid-back” than most of your typical Florida “resting-spots”. Great time of year to be there weather-wise. Sanibel used to be known for its sea-shells which the gals like to collect (Hmmmm).
Best of Luck with the rest of your journey and please keep us posted !!!
Frank, its still pretty laid back here, very quiet and quaint. I rode through the wildlife refuge today, very nice that the island folk were able to hold off the developers to save part of the island in its natural state, that probably took a lot of money and lawsuits. Nice how most structures are only one or two stories, kind of like the place is frozen in time back in the 1950s. I can imagine it gets pretty busy during the tourists season, already there is a constant line of cars on the main road. However, getting around by bike is perfect with all the bike paths and that cars have to stop to let the bikes cross. Still no fast food joints here Frank, the place is definitely much more laid back than the Pinellas County Beaches.
