The main purpose of the RV trip this year was to get away from the hot sweltering Florida summer. Now I am in a record heat wave in southeastern New York. Where the term heat wave originated I don’t know. A dead calm prevails over the forest. There is not a single leaf rustling on the trees, no waves that I can see. Perhaps if I had infrared goggles I would see heat waves. Temperatures are reaching the high 90s for the next few days. Temperatures are cooler in St. Petersburg Florida.
My only goal for this heat wave was to secure a RV site for the 4th of July holiday with a reliable 50 amp electrical service connection. Running three AC units requires 50 amp service. Traveling without a plan or reservations can leave you in a bind around major holidays. Securing a site leading up to the 4th of July, and another park after the 4th gave me a sense of relief.
Using the fireplace or heated floor anytime soon does not seem likely. Escaping the heat probably will require going all the way to Canada. One certainty I have learned from over 20 years of adventure travels, mostly cycling, and now in the RV, is that weather is always an important factor and often unpredictable. All you can do is deal with the weather and adapt. This weather is not what I expected. Still, the heat pales in comparison to what I endured when tornadoes howled past me last year in Kansas.
The most important website I use while traveling is the Weather Channel website. The next most important site is Google Maps. Combining the Weather Website with Google Maps would make a great project for some bright software engineer.
Towards the end of the week the heat wave will dissipate. The photos on this post will be my view up through the 4th of July while waiting out the heat wave. On the 5th of July we are heading up to Vermont and hoping for some cooler weather.
Rob,
Thanks for the updates on your excellent adventure. Hope the cool winds find you soon. Love the pics of your RV and cat.
Pat
Thanks Pat, hoping to find cool winds soon. I am sure you are now enjoying retirement too. Enjoy!
Retirement is the best! If your adventure takes you to South Carolina, let me know. Your RV may be too big to fit in our driveway, but we’ll figure something out!
Glad you are enjoying retirement Pat. My travels have brought me through SC. I stayed in Summerton SC on the way up here. There are 3 ways in and out of Florida, I-95, Alabama, and west on I-10. GA through Atlanta is not a good option. If I come through SC on the way back I will let you know. Your driveway is probably not big enough, I could always park in the street and hope no one notices. I’m sure there is a suitable RV park not far away.
