Last week was the most terrifying week of my life.
On Tuesday morning I had cataract surgery on my right eye. My understanding of the recovery period was that I would start to get my sight back within 24-48 hours. All I saw the next day was thousands of swirling black dots.
The next day I had a follow-up exam in the early afternoon. I could not see any row on the eye chart. I was unable to even count fingers. They told me to come in again on Friday. I am supposed to have cataract surgery on the left eye done next Tuesday. We could not proceed for surgery on the left eye until the sight in right eye was mostly recovered.
By Thursday night, I was having full blown panic attack. I still could not see.
I went to bed crying and woke up crying. My eyesight was no better in the morning. While I was toweling off after showering preparing to go back to the eye institute, I prayed to God, if you are ready now, so am I. I have never thought before.
Jewelry is not allowed during surgery. I had to remove my cross necklace. My friend Jackie who sponsored me at St. Matthew strung that necklace around my neck in October 2023. The necklace has never been removed. I didn’t put the cross back on after surgery because I am supposed to return next week for the surgery on the left eye. The clasp is very tricky to attach. By this time, I figured that there was no way I was going to have surgery again next week. I decided to put the cross back on. On my first try, I snagged the loop with the clasp.
Jackie drove me back to the eye surgery center on Friday morning. My body trembled as they took me back into a room for an eye check. When the doctor’s assistant brought up the eye chart, being able to see the top row of letters astonished me. Then I was able to read the second row, and then the third row, and also the fourth row. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Sorry, I couldn’t resist saying writing that.
At 10 a.m. I couldn’t see anything. At 10:30 a.m. I put the cross necklace back on. By noon, I was starting to see again. Coincidence, maybe, probably not. Praise the Lord.
Wow! I believe.
So glad you had such a “miracle”
recovery.
Thank you Christyne. I’ve got a ways to go still, but I am heading in the right direction. RV trip is delayed for now, but I am still hopeful of making it up to Michigan this summer to see all the gang.
Rob, Wow, sorry you had that experience, but glad it turned out well. I am a believer in the almighty. I don’t think it was a coincidence! Jim
Amen.
God is good and He is always with us, answering our prayers. Such a testament to our Lord!
Well Rob, I am truly sorry that your days following last Tuesday’s cataract surgery were so distressing. It was not what you expected. Hopefully improvement continues and you can have the other procedure tomorrow.
Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen is one of my favorites, and I used it in Ken’s funeral.
Hang in there and look forward to brighter days!
Debbie
